With the increasing popularity of the keto diet, thanks to its positive effects on weight loss and keeping testosterone levels balanced, comes the need for supplements that help you ease into the diet. Well, MCT oil is one of those.

This review aims to take a closer look at the ingredients and effects of the substance on the human body. Together, let’s discover how the Onnit MCT Oil can help you optimize your body’s performance.

MCT oil is also perfect for Paleo diet and other low-carb diets, as well as for weight management in general. This is due to its ketogenic effects.

By using pregnenolone cream or pregnenolone supplements, the levels of the compound in the body increases, and this brings about various benefits such as fatigue relief, and delay of the aging process.

About The Brand

For some time now, Onnit has done remarkably well in providing food, supplements, and fitness equipment that pushes for total human optimization. The company was established in 2010. A year later, they released a product that would be their best-seller - a cognitive enhancer named Alpha BRAIN.

In the same spirit of giving the body what it needs to get closer to its full potential, they also developed their own MCT oil product. MCTs are known to be healthy fats that provide extra energy and boost fat metabolism. Onnit MCT Oil, in particular, being a source of exogenous ketones, can help your body achieve a Ketogenic state.

Main Ingredients

Onnit MCT Oil has Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT) as its primary ingredient.

MCTs are a kind of dietary fat that is easily transformed into ketones, a vital source of energy. It can be quickly converted to Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) – the primary "fuel" of all cells in the human body. ATP is also one of the brain’s main sources of energy.

Onnit MCT Oil is a great source of fat for those who are on a ketogenic diet, the eating regime that's geared to reach a state of ketosis: a condition wherein the body burns stored fat for energy instead of dietary carbohydrates.

In particular, there are three kinds of MCT sources in this formulation:

  • Caprylic Acid (C8)

Caprylic Acid, also called octanoic acid, is a concentrated medium-chain fatty acid found in coconuts – specifically in coconut oil. It is faster to convert this fatty acid to caloric energy compared to other kinds of saturated fats.

There also have been preliminary research studies indicating that caprylic acid decreases cholesterol levels. Aside from that, it is also known to have antibacterial properties, thus able to fight bacterial infections of all kinds.
  • Capric Acid (C10)

Also called decanoic acid, this saturated fatty acid is found in liquid coconut oil as well. It is known for its strong antiviral and antimicrobial properties which could help the body combat diseases caused by bacteria and viruses.

Capric Acid also helps with weight management because it metabolizes fast and helps bring you to a ketogenic state. It can also give you an energy boost that will power up your workouts.
  • Lauric Acid

Lauric Acid is a medium-length long-chain fatty acid that is also found in coconut oil. It is known for being able to convert mono-glyceride into Monolaurin, a substance that can fight potentially harmful microorganisms such as viruses, bacteria, and protozoa.

Lauric acid is also ideal for combating acne and infections of the skin.

When coupled with exercise, the ketogenic effects also help boost testosterone levels. Higher levels of this hormone allow the body to benefit from decreased body fat, increased muscle mass, and improved libido.

MCT oil makes it easier to maintain a keto diet. After all, it is notoriously difficult to have quick access to energy, if you’re not eating carbs, but this supplement can alleviate that.

MCTs are believed to improve cognitive function as well. In fact, they produces chemicals which are said to help combat Alzheimer’s disease.

The Onnit MCT oil has been highly praised for its taste. Specifically, it is completely tasteless, which allows you to mix it into your favorite drinks without fearing for the outcome. Heaven knows how hard it is to find keto-friendly food and drinks and mixing more fat into them is not exactly appealing. With this MCT oil formulation though, the taste won’t be a problem at all.

If you don’t like the smell of coconut oil, you’re in luck too because this formula is odorless.

Onnit MCT oil can easily turn your ordinary cup of coffee to keto coffee - a delicious, creamy, energy-boosting drink that will provide you strength and mental clarity throughout the day. If that’s not enough, you can make it taste even better by using keto-approved creamers.

However, despite the positive feedback, there also have been claims of side-effects such as upset stomach and diarrhea. You can mitigate these problems by taking it slow: during the first days, make sure to take slightly less MCT oil than recommended, especially if you have a highly sensitive stomach.

How To Use

Take Onnit MCT oil 1-4 times a day (15 mL or 1 teaspoon) depending on how much dietary fat you get to consume, your energy requirements, and your stomach’s sensitivity.

Since it is flavorless, it can be mixed with any drinks such as water, coffee, tea, or even smoothies.

The popular bulletproof coffee is also made by mixing an ordinary coffee with MCT Oils.

Bulletproof coffee (or keto coffee) is a coffee-based drink with three main ingredients:

  • Brain Octane, a more refined MCT oil responsible for providing brain energy
  • XTC Oil, a regular MCT oil
  • Grass-Fed Butter or Organic Butter which has high CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) content. CLAs are fatty acids that boost metabolism, strengthen the immune system, and regulates cholesterol levels.

It can also be used a substitute for conventional oils in sauces and salad dressings. However, it has a relatively low smoking point which makes it not suitable for frying.

The Verdict

Things We Liked

  • Healthy Fuel - the energy boost is especially handy for those who are on a keto diet but are nonetheless active
  • That it is purely sourced from coconut gives the product higher concentrations of 3 different kinds of MCTs - Lauric Acid, C8, and C10, each with its own benefits.
  • You can easily add it to your favorite drinks. It doesn’t leave an oily aftertaste. It just mixes with the drink naturally while still providing you all the energy you need. Also, it’s flavorless which makes it easier for you to take it in. Unlike its sister product, the Onnit Emulsified MCT Oil, the Onnit MCT Oil is more tolerable to the average person’s palate.

Things We Didn't Like

  • What we did not like most about this product is that just like Alpha Brain, another dietary supplement from Onnit, it has some side effects such as stomach pains and diarrhea.
  • The price is also a bit expensive for its size, but there are websites (e.g. Amazon) that offer discounts and price-offs on this product from time to time.

All in all, this product is a handy exogenous ketone supplement if you’re looking to alleviate the effects of going keto. It’s also a great energy source, so if you like working out but don’t want to indulge in carbs as fuel, this will help you meet your daily energy needs. It might be a bit pricier but if you don’t mind paying a bit more so you can enjoy your favorite drinks without putting up with the altered taste, this is for you.
