Do your weight training today using any kind of unstable surface to attack your core, or just stand on one leg for balance.

G’Day Bob.

My husband and I watch you and your fantastic efforts on BL all the way over here in China. We have always watched and enjoyed the transformation of people’s lives over the years.

At 38, I am a mother of 3. Have a Physical Education Degree and teach PE 2 days a week here at an international school in Chonqing. While I have always kept an eye on my weight…I am slowing creaping up in number on the scales. To be truthful, I have always wanted to loose those 5-10kgs for as long as I can remember, at all different weights. It seems that those 10kgs are real bugger!!!

While it is very encouraging to see so much of a live turn around on BL with people shedding weight in 5 and 10 kg lots…I want to do that too. How? How can I move my motivation, butt and those 10kgs as successfully as the BL people over here in China?! Maybe I need a swift kick! Sadly I am looking for a quick fix…NOT the deal…but I fail to move more than the wish to be the strong/fit woman I used to be 16 years ago.

Am I the only one who isn’t obese, who wants to shed those 10 kgs? Any tips?…How do I find the motivation or mental strength to do this when I have no threat of death, loss of marriage or real need to be lighter? Am I the only one who cares about the weight I would like to ‘wish’ away? Probably. However, it is a desire and I would like some advice on how to turn my ‘nothingness’ into motivation to move more.

Yours truly,
Rachel

Have I just typed into oblivian or will I be surprised with a response to get me moving?

Bob! I just found your website and it’s awesome. I love a challenge…you’re great! :)

I am looking for examples of unstable surface exercises

DorothyApr 18, 2010

Can anyone give me some examples or a website of unstable surface exercises?

Excellent advice!! I adopted the point of view that if I can do any task ‘out of balance’, then it will only benefit my core strength to do it that way. And that has become my goal. I challenge my balance for my entire workout and as a result and it better shape than ever in my life! What other 55 year old can you name who can jump rope on a BOSU Balance Trainer for 20 minutes straight?

KimApr 19, 2010

Try a bosu ball with weights to do arm curls or you can try push ups on it.

Rachel,
I feel the same way. I am 29 years old and have 2 kids, 4 years old and 6 months old. I weigh 112 pounds, but I would love to lose about 10 of them. My other problem is that I am not toned. I have a flabby stomach that I can not get rid of. Everyone is out there to help the people that have a lot to lose (and they need it), but I can’t figure out how to fix myself. Have you received any good advice on how to shed those few pounds?

AmiApr 21, 2010

Bob, we need you to update your challenge page!

I walk/run most everyday on my treadmill. I would love to buy an elliptical or a stationary bike. Which would benefit me more???
Thanks,
Amber

ok seriously. Can someone please tell me how to do that w/ my legs as bad as they are? My starting weight was 380 lbs. I’ve dropped 40 lbs in 9 weeks. But I still have a hard time using my legs. My legs swell, I have circualtion problems, it hurts to even touch my legs. If that isn’t bad enough. I have osteo arthitis which has eaten a hole in my left leg & in the same leg I’m almost bone on bone. I need knee surgery, but that sugerion won’t do it until I’m down to 250 lbs. I want to excrise but it hurts so bad. I’m unable to stand for long peroids of time anymmore.I can’t even straighten out my leg all the way anymore. Any suggestions?

I’m having a hard time with this one. I’ve dropped 40 lbs in 9 weeks. But for some reason my legs won’t let me do what I need to do. I am no longer able to stand for long peroids of time. I have osteo arthitis, which has eaten a hole in my left leg & in the same leg I’m almost completely bone on bone. My legs swell bad. It hurts to even touch them. Balancing is something I’m having a hard time with. What can I do? My starting weight was 380 lbs. I need knee sugery but no one will do it until I can get down to 250 lbs. The weight must come off.

aces 24 – have you tries water aerobics? It would take the pressure off your joint while you get a full body workout. Many gyms and rec centers (or local universities) offer these types of programs. Just a thought :)

CDMortonMay 3, 2010

What do you suggest for people with balance issues, is there an adaption to increase strength?

snazzyginaMay 4, 2010

I’m 4 months pregnant and the balancing on one leg is GREAT for keeping up my balance and strength. Thanks, BOB!

DanaMay 6, 2010

Aces, try sitting on a balance ball or something else wiggly, and lift your feet off the ground (back straight). This will work your core without having to stand.

I just located this webiste and I am in aw. I’ve just started walking a week ago and I’ve drastically changed my eating habits this stems from the mere fact that because of my weight I’m paying double for life insurance.

jbwarmanMay 13, 2010

Yeah! I did half of my weights using a Bosu. I didn’t even read the challenge until now! Super stoked!

KelleyMay 15, 2010

Aces, try to get to a pool. There must be some sort of dressing you can use on your wounds that will allow you to get in the water. I have lost 83.5 lbs so far, and my main exercise has been swimming/water-jogging/aquasize.

I was in pain too, and my joints hurt in particular. I still have another 40+ pounds to go but I am almost pain free at this point, and I can now do weight bearing exercise. In fact, I walked to work every day this week! And no joint pain today!

So, keep it up. 40 lbs in 9 weeks is pretty good. Journal your food, and move whatever you can, when you can, and keep at it!

aces24May 18, 2010

Dana thank you for your suggestion about that ball. That was a good idea. :-) Leah & Kelley the pool is a good idea to. I’m not comfortable putting on a swim suit & going in public that way. I haven’t had a swim suit on since I’ve been at least 14 yrs old. I’m now 40 yrs. I have ALOT of issues to over come. This journey for me has just begun. It’s now been 12 weeks & I have now dropped 52 1/2 lbs. I am an emtional eater & have been since I’ve been 14. With issues that I’m not comfortable talking about. I’ve already had 3 stomach hernia sugeries, gall bladder sugery, appendix surgery, a miscarriage, I have circualtion problems in my legs, I have some blockage in my artieries thats in my legs to. I have osteo arthits which has eaten a hole in my left leg & I’m bone on bone with the same leg. i can’t stand for long peroids of time anymore & I have asthma. My dad died when he was 42 yrs old of PAD. He had both of his legs amputated, several heart attacks, seizures, strokes, by pass surgeries & more before he died. Now the same thing is starting to happen to me.I’m married with 2 young kids. I’m scared I’m going to die myself. Thats only some of the reasons why I’m trying to take this weight off. Plus I need knee sugery.I’m not comfortable in my own skin & i need to get to a point where I can be. thank you all for your suggestions & I will do my best to do them.

This is my goal for the next year. Bob, I want you to know that my pain is my gain..and that I will achieve my goal! I have to…my life depends on it.

I started core /strength training about a month ago to add to my daily workout and it is ABSOLUTELY amazing! I’ve lost 103lbs since last June 09 and I know this is going to help tone and built strength!!!! I’m having a blast!

Let the party begin! I am so excited to begin resculpting myself! It has taken four years for me to prove to myself…day by day…that I have indeed successfully quit smoking. Now it is time for me to take care of the 70 pounds that I packed on while learning to be a non-smoker. Have been a sloppy vegetarian for many years (meaning I’ve enjoyed cheese pizzas and lots of pasta), but have been happily educating myself to become vegan. Lots of changes and I welcome them all!

P.S. Please remind me of these happy thoughts when I’m screaming for mercy at tomorrow morning’s workout!
